About

Lumbarpuncture.net is a unique resource devoted to the medical procedure called lumbar puncture.  I estimate that at least 2 million of these procedures are performed each year worldwide (400,000 in the USA alone) - usually to investigate serious illness such as meningitis, multiple sclerosis, or to exclude serious causes of sudden severe headache.

I am a practising consultant neurologist from Northern Ireland.  I have performed many Lumbar Punctures in my 16 years of clinical practice.  I hope to demystify and educate, and hopefully help others improve practice in this area.

The Lumbar Puncture contains tips on good practice, reminders about anatomy, comments about personal experience and a resource of full text publications (free to view online). There are videos that can be viewed from here.  I have been fortunate to have members of the Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Support Forum contribute to some articles about their experience of LP (www.iihsupport.org). The site will grow slowly over time. Please subscribe to the RSS feeds to make sure you are kept up to date.

Please send me your comments, experiences or requests for information.

Thanks.
